Abstract
The article presents the results of research aimed at developing self-reducing briquettes from industrial waste intended to replace steel chips in ferroalloy smelting in submerged arc furnaces. The use of such briquettes makes it possible to reduce the production cost of ferroalloys and, to a certain extent, solve the problem of recycling industrial waste generated during steel production. During the study, the composition and manufacturing technology of the briquettes were developed. The influence of various binding materials on the strength characteristics of the briquettes was investigated, and the ratio of iron-containing components (rolling mill scale and aspiration dust from electric arc steelmaking furnaces) included in the briquetting mixture was optimized. Various methods of briquette forming and compaction were tested, including hydraulic pressing, roller pressing, and ring extrusion. In addition, laboratory studies of the solid-phase reduction process of the obtained briquettes were carried out, and the optimal conditions and operat-ing parameters of this process were determined. The research was conducted using waste generated in the steelmaking and rolling production processes of JSC “Uzmetkombinat.” Pilot-industrial smelting tests of FS45 ferrosilicon using the developed self-reducing briquettes were performed in the RVP-25.5 MVA submerged arc furnace at the ferroalloy pro-duction facility of JSC “Uzmetkombinat.” The expected economic effect associated with reducing the cost of purchas-ing steel chips for the plant’s ferroalloy production is estimated at approximately USD 300 thousand per year.
